Monterey’s Cannery Row
Cannery Row is the waterfront street in Monterey, California made famous by author, John Steinbeck. Once the center of a thriving fishing and canning industry, the Monterey fishery was one of the most productive in the world. After the collapse of Monterey’s fishing industry in the 1950s, the canneries failed and the area fell into disrepair.Today the area around Cannery Row is a marine sanctuary, which is home to a large group of California Sea Lions, and the famous street is a popular tourist attraction offering a variety of restaurants, hotels, gift shops, an aquarium, and several historical attractions. A few privately owned and operated fishing companies still exist on Cannery Row, just a short distance from the area frequented by tourists.
